Pictured above: Mark Schissler, Special Project Manager for Adelphi University in the Library MediaCenter on the Hauppauge Campus.        Adelphi University, New York State's first co-educational college, founded in 1896, whose main campus is situated in Garden City, has opened a Hauppauge extension campus which will accommodate students seeking quality education near their homes in Suffolk County.

The campus is located in the Hauppauge Industrial Park, off Motor Parkway in Hauppauge, the second largest park of its kind in the United States. Chosen for accessability and its roots to the 800 member Hauppauge Industrial Association, the centrally located site is within a 30 minute commute from 30 different school districts.

By joining the Hauppauge community Adelphi has strengthened its commitment, culturally, socially and educationally to the future of eastern Long Island.

"Our goal is to bring Adelphi's name and reputation to Suffolk County," said Mark Schissler, Adelphi's coordinator of Special projects. "We are now another game in town."

Today's high school graduates have a plethora of higher education choices but many times, because of economic constraints, students have chosen to stay at home on Long Island, work and pursue a college education. Adelphi was, at one time, one of only a handful of college choices for Long Islanders and is still the choice for many Suffolk County is home to 25,000 Adelphi graduates. But since the 1960s, other colleges and universities have settled in Suffolk County. Administrators at Adelphi decided to offer degree programs to east end Suffolk residents and this fall opened their new 7,200 square-foot Hauppauge center to 175 students. Offering flexible scheduling, a variety of programs, all options that exist at the Garden City institution, and competitive tuition, the Hauppauge Center is expected to accommodate 250 students this winter.

Adelphi is offering four separate degree programs at the Hauppauge campus, which features a state-of-the-art multimedia facility and a student lounge area: a Master of Business Administration program designed to serve middle-level professionals and others seeking advancement in management careers; a Master Degree in Educational Leadership and Technology; a Master in Social Work; and ABLE, an Adult Baccalaureate Learning Experience designed for adults 21-years of age or older.

Schissler said the advanced degree in business is designed to draw from the business community which surrounds the Hauppauge community. "By joining the Hauppauge community, Adelphi has strengthened its commitment to the future of Long Island." The program's required foundation core and advanced core components integrate contemporary management issues and business fundamentals, enabling students to acquire knowledge and competencies.

The Educational and Leadership Technology program, the only one of its kind on Long Island, offers a combination of theoretical and field-based studies that enable students to work in positions of educational leadership in roles such as: principal; assistant principal; and department chair or supervisor.

The ABLE program, is designed, Schissler said, for adults balancing careers and families and enables students to enroll in four-credit courses with available time slots for all schedules. The ABLE program, which has proven to be the most popular at Hauppauge, allows students to gain up to 60 credits for life experience.

Adelphi University has long been noted as a leader in the field of social work and the Hauppauge Campus will be offering, this January, in conjunction with St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, a Master of Social Work. Noting that St. Joseph's, one of the area's fastest growing higher education institutions, offers a speech education program, the two schools have formed a partnership with the advanced degree program in speech disorders.

Adelphi's 64-credit Master of Social Work program involves advanced course work as well as direct field practice. The School is affiliated with over 1,000 field agencies on Long Island, New York City and as far as Connecticut and New Jersey. Schissler said that students may elect to enter the program on a full-time, part time, or accelerated track.

"The beauty of the Hauppauge campus," Schissler explained, "is that students can design the course of their studies around their work and family schedules and still receive a diploma from a university as prestigious as Adelphi."
