A Salute to Service, a Torch to the Future
Veterans, active service members and future military recruits receive a patriotic salute as Center Moriches schools honor their dedication and sacrifice.

The torch of military service passed from one generation to the next as the Center Moriches School District honored veterans, active-duty personnel and students preparing to serve their country.
A highlight of the Veterans Day celebration was the symbolic passing of the torch from 2020 graduate Brendan Bernath, now serving with the Coast Guard in Maine, to Class of 2027 student Eliezer Espinal Cruz, who has enlisted in the Navy and plans to pursue a career in nuclear propulsion.
Bernath, excited to be back at his alma mater, emphasized the importance of helping young recruits navigate military life.
“It’s nice to be here as a mentor to the other students who are choosing to enter the military. It’s a big jump. I’m here to provide any help that I can,” said Bernath, who credited Center Moriches coach Chris Winslow with helping him make his career choice.
“I believe it’s the right decision for me,” Cruz said of joining the Navy. “There will be plenty of opportunities in the nuclear field.”
The celebration, coordinated by Assistant Principal Danielle Jackson, featured a procession of veterans and service members through Center Moriches Middle and High School, a “Hallway of Heroes” tribute, and a visit to Clayton Huey Elementary School for breakfast and another patriotic walkthrough.
“This is a phenomenal patriotic event that’s very fitting for this community,” said Brookhaven Supervisor Dan Panico, who is a regular at the school’s annual veterans celebration.
County Legislator Jim Mazzarella praised the district for bringing generations together in recognition of their contributions.
“It’s a great day to show the men and women of the military that we appreciate them for their service and their sacrifice,” the legislator said as the torch was passed.
The morning celebration also featured performances by the high school band and elementary students, bringing the school community together in a tribute to America’s military.
