The Working Families Party is extending its influence into Suffolk County, tying Democrat candidates to a progressive organization whose positions on immigration, criminal justice and healthcare contrast sharply with those of their Republican opponents.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, along with Assembly candidate Josh Slaughter, Senate hopeful Christopher Murray, and congressional contender Pat Halpin, have Working Families cross-endorsements, giving them an additional line on the November 3 ballot.

The party’s 2026 legislative agenda calls for higher taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations, taxpayer-funded medical coverage for illegal immigrants and restrictions on cooperation between local police and federal immigration authorities.

It supports the New York for All Act, which would restrict local participation in federal immigration enforcement, along with legislation ending government contracts for immigration detention facilities.

On criminal justice, the party supports New York’s cashless bail laws, opposes giving judges greater authority to detain defendants they consider dangerous, and seeks to loosen parole requirements for convicts.

Its agenda also includes eliminating mandatory minimum prison sentences, decriminalizing drug possession and shifting government resources from policing and incarceration toward social programs.

The Working Families Party maintains political ties with the Democratic Socialists of America, whose prominent members include New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The organizations have supported overlapping slates of progressive candidates and share policy priorities involving immigration, taxation, housing and government services.

The party also seeks greater influence in Albany and Washington, promoting expanded government programs, increased spending on public services and additional protections for illegal immigrants.

Republicans advocate stronger immigration enforcement, greater judicial discretion over bail and opposition to single-payer healthcare, creating a philosophical divide with the Working Families agenda.

Other Democrats running with Working Families support include state Sen. Monica Martinez in the 4th District and Assemblyman Tommy John Schiavoni in the 1st.
