Emergency Volunteers Mark 40 Years of Preparedness

Suffolk County is recognizing the volunteers who help communities prepare for and respond to disasters as National Preparedness Month coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Community Emergency Response Team program.

Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services is highlighting its volunteers during National CERT Week, Sept. 20-26, honoring residents trained to assist professional responders and their neighbors during emergencies.

“CERT volunteers are an invaluable part of our community’s preparedness efforts,” FRES Commissioner Rudy Sunderman said. “Through their training, dedication, and willingness to serve, they help create safer neighborhoods and strengthen our ability to face challenges together.”

Suffolk established its CERT program in 2003 following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, when New York State provided funding for counties to train volunteers to assist with homeland security and emergency preparedness. The Suffolk Legislature accepted the funding that year, and then-County Executive Robert Gaffney signed the measure on Sept. 29, 2003.

Since then, CERT volunteers have worked alongside state and local emergency personnel during Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy and the COVID-19 response. They have also supported major community events, including the Suffolk County Marathon.

“If the County is responsible for responding, CERT volunteers are usually right next to us,” Sunderman said.

The CERT concept originated with the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985 and became a national program in 1993. Today, more than 3,200 local programs operate across all 50 states, tribal nations and U.S. territories, with more than 600,000 people trained nationwide.

This year’s National CERT Week theme is “Carrying the Torch 40 Years & Beyond.”

Suffolk FRES is encouraging residents to wear green Wednesday, Sept. 23, reflecting the color worn by local CERT volunteers.
