An elderly Selden woman entrusted her care to a home health aide, only to allegedly have $1,200 worth of jewelry stolen by the very person hired to help her, Suffolk County Police said. Devika Ramcharran, 37, of North Bellport, was arrested Thursday night, November 5, following an investigation into the alleged theft from an 89-year-old woman living on Oakdale Avenue in Selden.

According to police, Ramcharran was employed as a home health aide by Senior Helpers of Smithtown, located at 35 Manor Road, Suite 104, in Smithtown. She had been assigned to provide care for the elderly woman at her residence when the alleged theft occurred. Investigators said Ramcharran stole jewelry valued at approximately $1,200 on September 28, 2026.

The alleged crime came to light when the elderly woman noticed her jewelry was missing and contacted Suffolk County Police. Sixth Squad detectives, working alongside officers from the Sixth Precinct Investigative Unit, launched an investigation that ultimately led to Ramcharran's arrest. Police took the caregiver into custody at approximately 11:10 p.m. Thursday, more than five weeks after the alleged theft.

Ramcharran was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony under New York State law. She was issued a desk appearance ticket and released pending her scheduled arraignment later this month at First District Court in Central Islip. Police have not disclosed the specific pieces of jewelry allegedly stolen or whether the missing property has been recovered.

Authorities are also investigating whether other individuals may have been victimized. Detectives are urging anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Ramcharran to contact the Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad at 631-854-8622.

The allegations remain under investigation, and Ramcharran is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
