Lalota’s Hypocrisy Leaves NY-1 Without a Candidate Worth Endorsing
America, New York and CD-1 Deserve Better

Hypocrisy is nothing new to Rep Lalota. For 42 years, the South Shore Press Editorial Board has upheld a simple rule regarding election screenings of candidates: when one candidate refuses to appear before us and the other makes the effort to engage with our readers, we endorse the candidate who shows up. It is a matter of respect, accountability, and the fundamental responsibility of anyone seeking public office to answer difficult questions. Rep LaLota has put that tradition to the test. Despite repeated requests, the incumbent congressman failed to make himself available to this Editorial Board. His Democratic opponent, Christopher Gallant, did what Rep LaLota would not: he showed up, sat down, and answered our questions.
The irony is particularly striking given LaLota's public criticism of Gallant for refusing to debate him. Apparently, the congressman believes candidates should face tough questions, provided he gets to decide who asks them. We thank Gallant for his time and willingness to answer our questions. We further respect his honesty in providing answers that, we are sure, he knew, would run counter to the ideals we and our readers hold dear. Among those was his insistence that he would vote to impeach the President were he seated in Congress. We are therefore confronted with an extraordinary dilemma.
If you have the unfortunate experience of being on Rep LaLota's email distribution list, you will get almost daily requests from his team for money. Within those funding requests there are a whole litany of claims pertaining to the outstanding achievements the Congressman has had in Congress. If you spend even a moment researching these claims, you will find that the overwhelming majority of them fall into one of two categories:
1) legislation that passed the house but either failed or was never voted on in the Senate, or
2) effects of larger legislation passed by the President and the Republican majority that had little or nothing to do with LaLota, aside from the fact that he voted "yes".
The Big Beautiful Bill being one such piece of legislation whose effects Lalota regularly claims as his own accomplishments. Using his "yes" vote as the basis for recognition is a bizarre claim for Rep LaLota, as his most notable accomplishment since being elected to Congress is initiating an expulsion vote for neighboring former Rep George Santos, which led to Santos' removal and that seat flipping to the Democrats, thereby nullifying Rep Lalota's own vote. In a world where the United States faces crisis after crisis, and the Republicans sit with a razor thin majority, every vote counts in determining our collective fates, and Lalota forfeited, essentially, two votes in his one major act in Congress. LaLota, of course, justifies this action by citing the array of bad behavior exhibited by Santos during his campaign and subsequent to his taking office, yet in the years since there have been dozens of sitting members of Congress indicted for crimes, exposed for campaign finance violations, and revealed to be engaging in all forms of personal perversions, and LaLota has said nothing about any of them, much less initiated an expulsion process. Hypocrisy at work, and worse yet, this exposes LaLota as a stooge for the powers that control his campaign and election prospects. The worst version of an elected official.
We are told that LaLota refused to answer our questions because of the ongoing participation of George Santos as a contributor to the South Shore Press. We would remind Mr. Lalota that Mr. Santos was expelled from Congress, served time in prison, and has subsequently had his sentence commuted by President Trump. Apparently paying for one's sins and even the will of President Trump is not sufficient for LaLota's very very high moral standards. We hope Rep LaLota never engages in any behavior that would put these standards to the light and expose that hypocrisy. We shall see.
As a policy matter we of course take issue with LaLota's continued vote for CRs, support for foreign wars, and financing of foreign governments like Ukraine who continue to drag America into foreign conflicts. LaLota is not alone in taking these positions and because of his back bencher status and reliance on party money to get elected, we cannot blame him for voting with the team on these matters. We prefer CD-1 had a free-thinking Congressman who has the intellect and free will to help steer Congress in the direction it so desperately needs to go, but Mr. LaLota possesses neither of those traits so we are stuck with what we have and don't hold that against him.
That of course brings us to the very difficult task of offering an opinion on this race. On one hand the South Shore Press has a longstanding policy of endorsing the candidate that shows up to answer questions on behalf of his or her constituents. On the other hand, while we thank Mr. Gallant for his time and honesty, we do sincerely believe that the policies and decisions he is likely to endorse were he to be seated in Congress would be detrimental to the country. We therefore cannot, in good faith, endorse Mr. Gallant.
We take the endorsement process very seriously and view these pages as our implicit recommendation to our readers of what to do when they go serve their sacred duty at the ballot box. A non-endorsement is the functional equivalent of telling our audience that they should not vote for anyone in this race, and that is precisely what we are recommending.
The good news is that, due to the ongoing great work of Suffolk County GOP Chairman Jesse Garcia, the Suffolk County Republican Party is extraordinarily well organized and does a great job of turning out the vote.
Thanks to Chairman Garcia, despite the long list of inadequacies of Congressman LaLota, and how ill deserving he is to serve in his seat, it is virtually impossible for Mr. LaLota to lose this election, which makes us comfortable offering no endorsement at all in this race.
We are all capable of change, and as he is likely to continue to represent CD-1, we can only hope that Rep Nick LaLota can one day summon the character and courage to represent the district and the country in the way it deserves. Godspeed Congressman.
