A man was shot in the right shoulder while boarding a Long Island Rail Road train at the Bellport station about 2:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, MTA police said.

The 40-year-old victim was on the eastbound platform with a bicycle when the train arrived. A preliminary review of video and witness statements showed that as passengers, including a group of four people, left the train and the platform, one person in the group turned and fired a gun toward passengers, striking the man as he boarded, the MTA police statement said. No other passengers or crew members were hurt.

The man stayed aboard, and the train carried him to the next station, Mastic-Shirley, where MTA officers boarded and found him. He was treated at NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk and released, police said. His injury was not life-threatening.

The shooter and the rest of the group fled the Bellport station. MTA police described the investigation as preliminary and ongoing, and no arrests had been announced as of Friday evening.

Montauk Branch service was disrupted ahead of the morning rush and resumed at 5:14 a.m., the MTA said.
