Mastic Beach Gas Station Dispute Ends in Shooting

A 48-year-old man was arrested after allegedly shooting another man in the leg following an argument that began inside a Mastic Beach gas station, Suffolk County Police said.

Police said Sammie Darby and a 29-year-old man became involved in a fight that began with a war of words inside the market at the Track Gas Station, located at 310 Neighborhood Road in Mastic Beach.

The two men were asked to leave the business, but their argument allegedly continued outside the gas station, according to police.

During the confrontation outside, Darby allegedly shot the other man in the leg.

Police and emergency personnel responded to the scene, and the victim was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue for treatment. His injuries were described by police as non-life-threatening.

Darby left the immediate scene following the shooting but was located and arrested by Suffolk County Police a short time later, authorities said.

Darby, who police described as homeless, was charged with second-degree assault.

He was held at the Suffolk County Police Department’s Sixth Precinct pending arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip.

Darby, like all defendants, is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
