Suffolk Legislator Jim Mazzarella honored longtime Mastic Fire Department member Michael Malone as the Third Legislative District’s Firefighter of the Year during a ceremony recognizing volunteer firefighters from across the county.

“Mike has dedicated 35 years to protecting and serving his community,” Mazzarella said. “He has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his fellow firefighters and the more than 18,000 residents served by the Mastic Fire District.”

Malone joined the department in 1991 and has been answering alarms ever since. He has also served as a fire commissioner for more than a decade, helping ensure the department has the training, equipment and resources needed to provide fire protection and safety education. Despite his leadership responsibilities, he continues to serve as an active firefighter and fire apparatus operator.

Mazzarella also praised Malone’s efforts to train new members and assist firefighters working toward becoming qualified equipment operators.

“Mike is also committed to preparing the next generation of firefighters,” Mazzarella said.

His dedication and teamwork have earned him additional recognition, including a Unit Citation.

Volunteer service has also become a family tradition. Malone’s wife, Christa, and daughter, Erin, are members of the department’s Auxiliary, while his son, Michael, serves as a Second Lieutenant with the Mastic Fire Department.

“Together, they represent a family deeply dedicated to serving their neighbors and community,” Mazzarella said.

Mazzarella said Malone’s decades of service reflect the commitment volunteer firefighters bring to the communities they protect.

“Congratulations to Michael Malone on this well-deserved recognition,” Mazzarella said. “We are grateful for all that you and your family do to keep our community safe.”
