The Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God drew worshippers from across Long Island and as far away as Connecticut and Rhode Island to the church on West End Avenue.

Depicting the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus, the icon has streamed fragrant oil known as myrrh for more than 15 years. Believers have attributed remarkable healings to the sacred image.

The icon's caretaker, the Rev. Nectarios Yangson, travels throughout the country bringing it to churches and hospitals. A police officer from Hawaii, Yangson described how his life changed when he assumed responsibility for the icon.

He told the gathering he “was married, had kids, a mortgage and a cat,” before dedicating himself to accompanying the sacred image. “I was chosen,” he said.

Archpriest Jonathan Ivanoff welcomed the visitors, offering prayers and anointing with oil from the icon regardless of religious affiliation.

Among those receiving the blessing was Viorica, originally from Romania and now living in Yaphank.

“I love the Mother of God. She helps me always,” she exclaimed after being anointed.

“It’s a blessing to have her here,” said Church Treasurer Joann Broda of Yaphank, noting the distances people traveled to attend.

Founded in 1983, St. John's serves Orthodox Christians throughout eastern Suffolk County.

The parish plans additional healing services in November and December using myrrh retained from the visit, extending the spiritual experience for those seeking prayer, comfort and blessings.
