Patriotic Pride on Display as Sayville Students Celebrate America 250

Sayville elementary students spent part of their summer honoring America’s 250th birthday through a program that combined patriotic themes with academics, fitness, food, science and the arts.

The Sayville School District’s SCOPE Enrichment Summer 2026 program, “Salute to America’s 250th!,” welcomed students in kindergarten through fifth grade for four weeks of activities at Cherry Avenue Elementary School. Held weekday mornings in July, the program turned the nation’s semiquincentennial into an opportunity for students to explore American history, culture, creativity and civic pride.

“Summer learning should be engaging, inspiring, and filled with opportunities for students to explore their interests in new ways,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marc Ferris said.

Students celebrated the milestone through courses built around distinctly American experiences. “Stars, Stripes & Showtunes” featured music and themes from “Annie,” “Hamilton,” “Newsies” and “1776.” Young performers strengthened their acting and singing skills while learning about independence, resilience and civic pride before presenting a showcase for their families.

In “All-American Eats,” students prepared classic summer treats, while “American Mini Warrior” offered relay races, obstacle courses and team challenges. A circus-themed fine arts course celebrated the color and character of classic American entertainment through paintings, sculptures and a student showcase.

The America 250 celebration also extended into STEM. Students designed model roller coasters, Ferris wheels and spinning rides while studying gravity, speed, energy and motion. Separate academic sessions reinforced reading, writing and math skills ahead of the new school year.

Students could register for a different course each week or revisit a favorite theme. Together, the activities made America’s anniversary both meaningful and memorable.

Sayville partners with SCOPE Education Services each summer to extend learning beyond the traditional school year. SCOPE is a nonprofit organization chartered by the New York State Board of Regents that provides educational programs and services across New York.
