Sound Rescue: Cops Save 5 From Sinking Boat

Five people were rescued from a sinking fishing boat in the Long Island Sound near Asharoken Monday night, Suffolk County police said.

The group was aboard a 17-foot vessel when it began taking on water at approximately 5:25 p.m. One of the men called 911 and reported that the boat was already halfway filled with water.

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau Officers John Dreyer, Dave Froehlich and Jack Hardy responded aboard Marine Bravo. The officers pulled their police vessel alongside the distressed boat and brought all five men safely aboard.

No injuries were reported.

After rescuing the stranded boaters, police removed the water from the partially submerged boat and stabilized it. They then towed the vessel to the Soundview Boat Ramp in Northport.
