The Town of Brookhaven recently gave local young basketball players an opportunity to sharpen their skills and learn from players who have competed at some of the highest levels.

Last week, the Town hosted a youth basketball clinic for boys and girls in grades 3 through 12, giving participants a chance to compete, learn new skills and receive guidance from former stars who know what it takes to succeed on the court.

The clinic was hosted by Tristan Smith, a former Division I basketball player and Amityville High School standout. Smith brought his experience to the court while helping local players learn more about the game and what it takes to continue developing as a player.

Smith wasn't alone in giving back to the community.

Longwood standout Clarence Alonzo and Walt Whitman standout Antonie Aguido also took part in the clinic, joining Smith in working with the young athletes. Having local players and former stars share their experiences provided the participants with more than just basketball instruction. It gave them an opportunity to learn from athletes who have walked a similar path.

For the young players, the clinic was a chance to get on the court, compete and have fun while learning from people who have experienced the game at a high level.

For the athletes hosting the clinic, it was an opportunity to give back to the community that helped them along their own basketball journeys.

The Town of Brookhaven's youth programs continue to provide opportunities for local children to stay active, develop their skills and connect with others through sports.

With Smith, Alonzo and Aguido leading the way, the basketball clinic was a great example of local athletes using their experience to help the next generation.

For the boys and girls who participated, they left with new basketball knowledge, new skills and, hopefully, a little more motivation to keep working on their game.
