The William Floyd girls’ varsity tennis team delivered a thrilling performance in the Suffolk County playoffs, rallying for a dramatic 4-3 victory over Westhampton in the semifinals to earn a spot in the county championship match.
Under the leadership of head coach Dave Pia and assistant coach Michael Clauberg, the No. 2-seeded Colonials showed tremendous determination, with the outcome coming down to a clutch performance on the doubles court.
With the final set hanging in the balance, the doubles team of Gianna Martin and Rylie Wiegand rose to the occasion. Trailing 4-3, the duo battled back to force a tiebreaker before securing a hard-fought victory, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6, clinching both the match and the team victory for William Floyd.
The win continued an impressive postseason run for the Colonials, who have established themselves as one of Suffolk County’s most consistent programs. William Floyd has qualified for the playoffs in 24 consecutive seasons and has reached the Final Four 13 times in the past 16 years. The program also captured the Suffolk County Championship in 2014.
Unfortunately, William Floyd’s championship run came to an end with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Commack in the Suffolk County Championship. The Colonials battled until the final point but came up just short of bringing home the title.
Despite the tough finish, the season was another successful chapter for a program built on consistency, teamwork and perseverance. With three playoff victories, another Final Four appearance and a trip to the county championship match, the Colonials once again demonstrated their ability to compete with the best teams in Suffolk County.
The season may have ended one match short of a championship, but William Floyd’s accomplishments reflect the hard work and dedication that have made the program a perennial postseason contender.
