The fifth annual Town of Huntington Army-Navy Game brought an incredible community atmosphere to Half Hollow Hills High School East on Saturday as the RedHawks hosted Northport in a special afternoon honoring local veterans and members of the military.
With packed stands, tremendous school spirit and a special Army-Navy ceremony before kickoff, the event was about much more than football. Students, families, veterans and community members came together to recognize those who have served while supporting the Hills East football program.
And the game itself provided a finish worthy of the occasion.
After a scoreless first half, the RedHawks and Tigers traded touchdowns in the second half before Northport rallied late to force overtime. Hills East eventually had the final say when senior kicker Noah Reinstein drilled a 27-yard field goal just inside the left upright, giving the RedHawks a dramatic 17-14 victory.
The kick sent the home crowd into a frenzy and kept Hills East undefeated at 4-0. Reinstein, who had never before attempted a game-winning field goal, admitted he was nervous before delivering one of the biggest kicks of his high school career.
The game also featured plenty of defensive intensity. Hills East's defense had not allowed a point through its first three games before Northport finally broke through in the fourth quarter. Junior defensive tackle Michai Crump led the RedHawks with 11 tackles, while the defense came up with a crucial stop in overtime to set up Reinstein's game-winning opportunity.
While the final score will be remembered, the fifth annual Army-Navy Game was about something even bigger. The Hills East community came together to honor the men and women who have served their country, creating an afternoon where football, school spirit and gratitude shared the spotlight.
It was a memorable day at The Nest in Dix Hills, capped by a finish that made the celebration even more special.
