The William Floyd School District officially honored one of the most influential figures in its history this past weekend, renaming its Lincoln Avenue football field in recognition of former head coach Paul Longo and his extraordinary 31-year legacy in Mastic Beach.
Surrounded by family, friends and some of the greatest players to ever wear the Colonials uniform, Longo watched as the district unveiled the new name, “Paul Longo Field,” displayed prominently across the top of the press box. The ceremony celebrated a coach whose impact extended far beyond the scoreboard, leaving a lasting mark on generations of student-athletes and the entire William Floyd community.
As an additional tribute to Longo’s remarkable accomplishments, a commemorative plaque was installed just outside the Colonials’ locker room, ensuring his legacy will remain a permanent part of the program. Longo also received a replica of the plaque as a keepsake from the special occasion.
During his 31 years leading William Floyd football, Longo established himself as one of the most successful high school coaches in Suffolk County history. He guided the Colonials to 15 Suffolk County championships and five Long Island championships, building a program that consistently competed among the best in the region.
His teams also set a Suffolk County record with 42 consecutive victories between 2005 and 2008, a remarkable run that remains one of the defining accomplishments of his coaching career.
Those numbers tell only part of the story. For the countless players who came through the program, Longo’s influence extended beyond Friday night games and championship celebrations. His time on the sidelines helped shape young men, teaching lessons about commitment, teamwork, discipline and perseverance that they could carry with them long after their playing days ended.
State Sen. Dean Murray attended the ceremony and reflected on the significance of the honor.
“It was a privilege to attend the William Floyd High School Football Field Renaming Ceremony this morning in honor of Coach Paul Longo,” Murray said. “Coach Longo spent 31 years on the sidelines of this football field leading young men to greatness.”
Murray also emphasized that Longo’s influence will continue to be felt throughout the community for years to come, noting the lasting impact he made on his players, the school district and the sport itself.
“His influence on the players, district, and sport of football will be felt by generations to come as they leave the locker room and head into fierce matchups,” Murray said.
The renaming of the field ensures that every future Colonials team will take the field beneath the name of a coach who helped define William Floyd football. It is a fitting tribute to a career built on sustained success, countless relationships and a commitment to developing student-athletes.
For Longo, the name above the press box serves as a permanent reminder of 31 years spent building a winning tradition and helping shape the lives of young men in the William Floyd community.
