Miller Place Football Gets Rare Out-of-State Matchup

The Miller Place football team has a new opponent on its schedule, and this is one of the rarest scheduling quirks a local high school football program can experience.

The Panthers will host Hasbrouck Heights of New Jersey on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. in a nonconference matchup, giving Miller Place an opportunity to face a program it has never played before.

The unusual game came together after several Suffolk County teams were unable to field varsity teams this fall, leaving openings on the schedules of teams that had already prepared for a full season.

Miller Place was among those affected. When Amityville and Port Jefferson were unable to field varsity teams, the Panthers saw two games disappear from their schedule, including their homecoming game.

The cancellations left Miller Place with just a six-game season and only two scheduled home games.

Port Jefferson’s players have since joined Rocky Point’s varsity program under an interim state ruling. However, the Royals’ original schedule, including the game against Miller Place that had been scheduled earlier this month, remains forfeited.

The loss of two games was particularly difficult for Miller Place’s seniors, many of whom have only a limited number of varsity football games remaining in their high school careers.

With Hasbrouck Heights also looking to fill an opening on its schedule, the two programs found an opportunity to create a matchup that otherwise would have been unlikely to happen.

The matchup also gives the Panthers a chance to make a little history.

Under New York State rules, teams face limits on how many games they can play outside their section while remaining eligible for the postseason. With two games already removed from Miller Place’s schedule, however, the Panthers had room to add the out-of-state contest.

What began as an unfortunate situation for the Panthers has now created a unique opportunity. Miller Place will get an extra game, a new opponent and a chance to make a little history when Hasbrouck Heights comes to town on Oct. 10.

For a senior class that suddenly found itself with fewer opportunities to take the field, the unexpected matchup gives the Panthers one more Saturday to play the game they love.
