Girls wrestling continues to break barriers across New York, and the sport’s latest milestone is welcome news for athletes, coaches and families throughout Suffolk County and Long Island.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Executive Committee has voted to add two additional state championships beginning with the 2027-28 academic year, including a dedicated Dual Meet State Championship for girls wrestling.
The girls championship will take place during the same weekend as the boys Dual Meet State Championships, giving female wrestlers their own opportunity to compete for a team title on the state’s biggest stage.
For the growing number of girls wrestling programs across Suffolk County and Long Island, the decision represents much more than another championship on the calendar. It is recognition of the countless hours spent in the wrestling room, the courage it takes to step onto the mat and the determination of athletes who have helped build a sport that continues to gain momentum.
Girls wrestling has made tremendous strides in recent years, with more athletes embracing the challenge and more schools providing opportunities to compete. Behind that growth are wrestlers who have pushed through demanding practices, challenging matches and the pressures of competing in a sport that requires both physical toughness and mental strength.
Long Island has a proud wrestling tradition, and the addition of a girls Dual Meet State Championship creates another opportunity for local programs to contribute to that legacy. For Suffolk County athletes, it offers a new team-oriented goal to chase, bringing teammates, coaches, classmates and communities together in pursuit of a state title.
Unlike individual tournaments, dual meets place the entire lineup in the spotlight. Every match matters, and every wrestler has a chance to make a difference in the final outcome. That team atmosphere makes the new championship especially meaningful for athletes who have worked together to build their programs.
Beginning in 2027-28, girls wrestlers will have another major opportunity to showcase their talent and compete for state honors. For the young athletes who helped grow the sport and those just beginning their wrestling journeys, the decision is a powerful sign that their efforts are making a lasting difference.
The championship marks another important step forward for girls wrestling in New York, opening the door for future generations of Suffolk County and Long Island wrestlers to pursue a team state title of their own.
