Philbrick Takes Over as Ward Melville Stays Unbeaten

Hudson Philbrick has established himself as one of the top players on Long Island, and he showed exactly why this past week when he turned in an impressive all-around performance to lead Ward Melville to a 35-25 victory over Connetquot.

The Patriots found themselves in an early hole, trailing 13-0 after the first quarter. That’s when Philbrick took over and helped spark the comeback.

Philbrick made an impact through the air and on the ground, throwing for 124 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 14 times for 101 yards and two more scores. His ability to make plays in multiple ways proved to be the difference as Ward Melville rallied from the early deficit.

While Philbrick was the catalyst, he certainly didn’t do it alone.

Chris Retzlaff provided a big contribution on the ground, rushing for 60 yards and a touchdown. Five different Ward Melville players carried the ball during the game, giving the Patriots a balanced rushing attack that helped keep the Connetquot defense on its heels.

The Patriots also received contributions through the air. LJ DePaul and Angelo Sorbera each caught a touchdown pass, while Derek Karpowicz and Retzlaff added one and two receptions, respectively.

Philbrick faced plenty of pressure throughout the afternoon and was sacked three times, but he continued to stand strong in the pocket and make plays when Ward Melville needed them most. His combination of passing, running and leadership helped the Patriots overcome their slow start and remain unbeaten.

Now, the Patriots turn their attention to one of the most anticipated matchups of the young season.
