Sachem North's Linemen Set the Tone

This past week, the men up front were front and center as they set the tone for the upcoming Suffolk County high school football season. Sixteen teams from across Long Island gathered for the National Football Foundation Suffolk Chapter's 3rd Annual Long Island Lineman Challenge, but when the dust settled, only one team could walk away with the championship.

That honor belonged to Sachem North, which captured first place after an outstanding performance throughout the day.

The competition featured 16 teams from across Long Island, including 15 Suffolk County squads—Amityville, Center Moriches, Centereach, Connetquot, Kings Park, Lindenhurst, Longwood, Miller Place, Newfield, Northport, Rocky Point, Smithtown West, William Floyd, two teams each from Sachem North and Smithtown East—and Nassau County representative Wantagh.

The Lineman Challenge featured 10 events designed to test every aspect of playing in the trenches. Competitors battled through the farmer's carry, bench press, pyramid build, medicine ball toss, tire flip, sled push, three-cone drill, obstacle course, hand shield course and several other events that tested strength, power, agility and teamwork.

The day concluded with a tug-of-war competition, which was won by 2nd place Longwood. However, Sachem North had already separated itself from the field, finishing with 175 points to claim the championship. Longwood finished second with 153 points, while Miller Place placed third with 147 points.

Leading the way for the Flaming Arrows were Anthony Chirichella, Dwayne Dumpson, Donald Carman, Niko Valenza, Brayden Sigler, Jack Lentz and Logan Karavias, a group that has already put the rest of Suffolk County on notice heading into the fall season.

The event continues to grow every year. Last summer, just 10 teams participated. This year, that number jumped to 16, showing just how much excitement the Lineman Challenge has generated across Long Island.

While the games don't begin for a few more weeks, one thing is already clear: if this competition was any indication, Sachem North's line will be one of the biggest strengths to watch this football season.
