Smith Point Lifeguards Rule the Beach

The Smith Point Lifeguard Corps once again proved why it is considered one of the premier beach patrols on Long Island, capturing top honors during this year's Long Island Lifeguard Competition.

The annual event brought together some of the region's best lifeguards, with teams traveling from as far as Jones Beach and East Hampton to compete in a series of challenging events designed to test strength, endurance, teamwork, and lifesaving skills. When the competition came to an end, it was the Smith Point Lifeguard Corps standing atop the leaderboard once again.

The victory is another testament to the dedication and preparation of the Smith Point team, whose members spend countless hours training to protect beachgoers throughout the summer season.

Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella praised the lifeguards for their commitment to the community.

"We are fortunate to have some of the finest lifeguards in the nation right here in our community, dedicated to safeguarding our families," Mazzarella said.

The event also featured a special demonstration by the 106th Rescue Wing based in Westhampton Beach. Spectators were treated to an exciting display by the unit's Pararescuemen (PJs), elite members of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command who are trained in combat search and rescue, emergency trauma medicine, and survival operations in some of the world's most demanding environments.

Adding to the local pride, many former Smith Point lifeguards have gone on to serve as Pararescuemen, continuing a tradition of service that extends well beyond the beach.

Following the competition, Mazzarella again recognized both groups for their dedication.

"We are deeply grateful and proud to have the best of the best serving our county and our country," he said.

From protecting swimmers along Suffolk County's shoreline to serving the nation in elite military roles, the Smith Point Lifeguard Corps continues to set the standard for excellence, making the community proud both on and off the beach.
