South Shore Press Video Vault: Wild ATV Takeover Roars Across Suffolk as SCPD Make Arrests

Suffolk County Police arrested three people after a street takeover involving at least 200 ATVs, dirt bikes and motorcycles stretched across central Suffolk, leading to multiple arrests, vehicle impoundments and the recovery of a loaded handgun.

The incident began at approximately 4:20 p.m. when officers responded to numerous 911 calls reporting riders driving recklessly and performing stunts along Route 347 in Hauppauge.

According to police, officers assigned to the Fourth Precinct arrested two people there and impounded several vehicles.

Investigators said the group dispersed before regrouping near Motor Parkway and Express Drive South in Brentwood. Highway Patrol officers and Third Precinct officers later observed the riders traveling through Bay Shore at approximately 6:30 p.m. Two ATVs became disabled, prompting their operators to flee on foot.

Police apprehended one suspect and allegedly discovered a loaded firearm in his possession.

Ava Mongiello, 23, of Mount Sinai, and Jahkil Arroyo, 29, of Central Islip, were each charged with reckless driving, second-degree reckless endangerment and unlawfully fleeing a police officer. Both were issued Desk Appearance Tickets.

Shamir Solomon, 22, of Roosevelt, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful speed contest and reckless driving. Police said he was held overnight at the Third Precinct pending arraignment Sunday in First District Court in Central Islip.

Police impounded 10 vehicles during the investigation. Authorities did not announce additional arrests but said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing evidence surrounding the large gathering and anyone else who may have participated in the dangerous roadway takeover.

Police urged motorists to report reckless riding and reminded residents that illegal street takeovers endanger participants, spectators and drivers alike.
