Brookhaven Declares Emergency Ahead Of Nor’easter

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Daniel J. Panico declared a State of Emergency Saturday as a powerful nor’easter bears down on Long Island, warning residents to prepare for damaging winds, heavy rain, power outages and possible coastal flooding.

The emergency declaration comes as updated forecasts show the storm shifting westward, potentially putting Brookhaven in line for a stronger hit than initially expected.

“Based on the latest forecast, this storm is shifting westward and is now expected to have a greater impact on Brookhaven than initially anticipated,” Panico said.

Panico urged residents not to wait until conditions deteriorate to get ready.

“I have declared a State of Emergency so the Town has every resource available to respond quickly and effectively,” Panico said. “Residents should prepare now—charge your devices, secure outdoor items and be ready for high winds, downed trees, power outages and potential coastal flooding.”

The declaration gives Brookhaven additional flexibility to mobilize resources and respond to storm-related emergencies. It also helps preserve the Town’s eligibility for potential financial assistance if storm damage reaches applicable thresholds.

Town departments are preparing for the storm and will remain in coordination with emergency response agencies as conditions develop.

Officials are particularly warning residents about the danger from downed trees and electrical wires as strong winds move through the area.

Residents should never approach or touch a downed power line. Downed wires and power outages should be reported directly to PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0075. Current outages and estimated restoration times can be tracked through PSEG Long Island’s outage map at outagemap.psegliny.com.

Residents are also being urged to secure garbage cans, patio furniture and other outdoor objects that could become dangerous projectiles during periods of high wind.

For non-emergency Town matters during the storm, Brookhaven residents can call 631-451-TOWN. Anyone facing an immediate emergency should call 911.

“Our Town departments are prepared, and we will remain in close coordination with our emergency response partners throughout the storm,” Panico said.

Brookhaven officials said they will continue monitoring the nor’easter and provide additional information as conditions and forecasts change.
