Health Fair Brings Free Services to Shirley

Families across Shirley turned out Saturday for a Community Health Fair that brought free medical screenings, health information and community services directly to local residents.

The event offered free glucose, blood pressure and asthma screenings, along with STD and HIV testing, mental health resources and domestic violence assistance. Many residents were among those taking advantage of the services offered throughout the afternoon.

The fair also provided activities for children and families, including live music, entertainment, free children’s haircuts, face painting, popcorn, a bounce house, refreshments, clothing and other giveaways.

The event brought together Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, state Sen. Dean Murray, the FAS Jesucristo Vive Foundation and participating health care and community organizations.

“Government works best when we are out in the community, listening to people and connecting families with the resources they need,” DeStefano said. “I was proud to see so many residents come out, receive important health screenings and spend time together as families.”

DeStefano said partnerships between government, nonprofit organizations, health care providers and volunteers can make services more accessible to residents who might otherwise have difficulty finding them.

“This health fair showed what can be accomplished when local leaders, nonprofit organizations and health care professionals work together,” he said.

Murray said helping residents directly is one of the most rewarding aspects of public service.

“Events like this are what uplift communities, and I will always be thankful for opportunities to partner with colleagues and organizations that offer essential resources to those in need,” Murray said.

DeStefano thanked the foundation, Sen. Murray, health care providers, volunteers and local organizations that participated. He said his office plans to continue working with community groups to expand access to health care services, assistance programs and other resources for area residents.
