Join the Summer Reading Club at the Library

The Summer Reading Club for Kids is in full swing at the library. There are two clubs: one for early readers, where parents can do activities and read to their children from birth through entering kindergarten, and another for school-age children entering first through sixth grade. Join online or stop in to sign up. Read books or complete activities to fill your activity board. Every hour you read earns you a raffle ticket for the weekly prize drawing. For every five hours read, you earn a button. Members who complete the Summer Reading Club by reading 19 hours are entered to win the grand prize: a tablet computer.

This year, the Summer Reading Club is entirely online through the Beanstack app. Stop by the library’s Children’s Department or visit the library’s website to learn more. It’s easy to track your activities through the app using your phone or tablet. Plus, the reading club is a great way for parents and children to bond by choosing books together, visiting the library, and celebrating achievements.

Participating in the Summer Reading Club can help children maintain academic skills over the summer break. Here’s how summer reading helps prevent the “summer slide”:

• Stops Brain Drain: The brain is like a muscle. Just as playing a sport keeps the body strong, reading keeps the brain active. Reading just six books over the summer can help prevent reading skills from declining.

• Builds New Words: Reading exposes children to new vocabulary, helping expand their word knowledge and improve their understanding of more complex ideas in school.

• Makes Learning a Habit: Regular reading keeps children in learning mode. Even just 20 minutes a day can help prevent the “summer slide.”

• Keeps Kids Interested: When children choose books they enjoy, they stay curious and engaged, making reading feel like fun instead of a chore.
