Mastic Beach Artist Turns Wind Into Waterfront Art

A local artist is harnessing the wind, and asking her neighbors to help turn it into art.

Mastic Beach ceramic artist and sculptor Jessamyn Go has received a $5,000 New Works Artist Grant to create “Witness the Wind,” a community-built public sculpture planned for Violet Cove.

The grant comes through the Statewide Community Regrant program, administered on Long Island by the Huntington Arts Council.

Go's project will invite residents ages 5 and older to a free clay workshop at Violet Cove, where they can create ceramic pieces inspired by wind, movement and sound. Selected creations will become part of the finished sculpture, combined with original ceramic components Go makes at her Mastic Beach studio.

The sculpture is being designed to move and produce sound as the wind blows, transforming an invisible natural force into something visitors can see and hear.

“I wanted to create a project where the community doesn't just experience the artwork—they become part of it,” Go said.

The project will also highlight wind as a renewable energy resource while connecting the artwork to Mastic Beach's coastal environment.

Go is partnering with the Mastic Beach Conservancy, where she serves as director of its Ecology Art Lab. The organization will assist with community outreach, environmental education and programming surrounding Violet Cove.

The waterfront park features recreational and conservation amenities, including a kayak launch and sugar kelp drying rack.

Organizers are also emphasizing accessibility. The workshop will be free and open to beginners, with Spanish and American Sign Language interpretation available upon registration. Accessible parking and an ADA-compliant restroom will be available.

Go, founder of Femme Sole Studio, also serves on the Suffolk County Citizens Advisory Board for the Arts.

Once completed, “Witness the Wind” will remain on public display at Violet Cove, leaving behind a waterfront sculpture literally shaped by the Mastic Beach community.
