A $40 million New York State housing investment is bringing new hope, new homes, and much-needed stability to Suffolk County seniors.
Brookhaven Town Supervisor Daniel Panico and Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine are celebrating the completion of Medford Gardens, a 67-unit affordable housing development designed to help older residents remain on Long Island.
The development, located in Medford, provides affordable apartments for residents 55 and older, including 33 units reserved for eligible seniors experiencing homelessness and mental health challenges.
“Medford Gardens will provide seniors in our community with safe, affordable housing and the stability of a place to call home. I thank WellLife Network and our partners at New York State for their investment in Medford and the people who call Brookhaven home,” Panico said.
Romaine emphasized the importance of keeping seniors in the communities they helped build.
“Suffolk County strongly supports developments and infrastructure projects that benefit our seniors while making housing more attainable. The opening of Medford Gardens signifies a new chapter for these residents as we want seniors to continue to call Long Island home,” Romaine said.
Developed by WellLife Network, the complex offers more than just apartments. Residents have access to case management, transportation assistance, health services, crisis intervention, and employment training.
Amenities include walking paths, a community garden, exercise facilities, a library, and gathering spaces designed to combat senior isolation.
The New York State investment includes more than $11 million in housing subsidies and $8 million through the Homeless Housing and Assistance Program. Federal and state tax credits are expected to generate another $19 million.
The development serves residents 55 and older earning up to 60% of the area median income. Thirty-three apartments are reserved for eligible seniors experiencing homelessness and mental health challenges, while 11 units are specially adapted for residents with mobility or sensory disabilities.
