Stony Brook Medicine Plans Major Farmingville Expansion

Stony Brook Medicine is proposing a major expansion in Farmingville, taking over a vacant former Amazon Fresh location and constructing a new 30,000-square-foot medical building, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico announced.

The health system has submitted plans to occupy the vacant space on North Ocean Avenue after Amazon Fresh abandoned plans for the property. Stony Brook Medicine is also proposing the additional medical building on the southeastern portion of the site along Horseblock Road.

Panico said he and Councilman Neil Manzella have worked to find a new use for the property since Amazon Fresh pulled out. The Stony Brook proposal would represent a significant shift from the retail strip center previously envisioned for the site.

“This proposal presents an opportunity to put this vacant property to productive use while bringing expanded medical services and significant investment to our community,” Panico said.

Panico praised Stony Brook Medicine’s leadership and Manzella for advancing the project. He said he expects the proposal to come before the Brookhaven Town Board for a site plan hearing in the coming months.

In a separate announcement, Panico said the Town Board has authorized the acquisition of four acres of undeveloped woodland in Medford, adding another piece to the South Overton Preserve.

The preserve now encompasses more than 125 acres of town-protected land, providing a natural buffer between industrial and residential development and preserving wildlife habitat.

The newly authorized acquisition is also within the compatible growth area of the Central Pine Barrens, making the preservation significant for groundwater protection. Long Island relies on groundwater beneath the island as its source of drinking water.

Panico described the four-acre property as one of the final pieces needed to complete the South Overton Preserve, continuing Brookhaven’s efforts to protect environmentally sensitive land from future development.
