Stony Brook Scarecrows Take Over For Fall

Fall activities are in full swing at Stony Brook Village Center with a 36-year-old scarecrow contest culminating in the annual Halloween festival through the nonprofit Ward Melville Heritage Organization.

“The possibilities are endless,” said Communications Manager Claudia Powell of the scarecrow contest that typically draws 40 entries. From Barbie scarecrows to giant monsters, she said, “people are constantly coming up with creative ideas.”

Those scarecrows are then on display through October, at the Stony Brook Village Center, located at 111 Main St. Visitors are encouraged to view and vote for their favorites, which are lined up on the sidewalk alongside the center’s shops and restaurants. Each shop will have ballots available starting Oct. 3.

Offering cash prizes to nine winners, the scarecrow challenge beckons creators in three categories: previous winners and professionals; individual adults or families; and individual or groups of children 12 and under.

“It seems every year it just gets bigger so that’s something we’re very excited for,” said Powell, who appreciates the event for joining the community together.

There is a $30 registration fee per scarecrow, and the deadline to enter is Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Look for the winners to be announced on Halloween, Oct. 31, when Stony Brook Village Center hosts its almost four-decade-old festival from 12 to 4 p.m. Participants can join in trick or treating at the various shops, assorted lawn games and a photo opportunity with 7-foot-tall Monster Merlin.

With WALK 97.5 serving up seasonal music on site, “the kids can dance” and all are encouraged to wear costumes, Powell said.

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization—established in 1939—is on a mission to preserve the community’s history and cultural heritage, which often means hosting educational programs and local events.
