Three Arrested, Gun Seized After 200-Vehicle Suffolk Street Takeover

Suffolk County police arrested three people and impounded 10 vehicles Saturday after a mob of at least 200 ATVs, dirt bikes and motorcycles staged a rolling street takeover that cut across several communities before officers made arrests — including one involving a loaded firearm.

The trouble started around 4:20 p.m. when Fourth Precinct officers began fielding a wave of 911 calls reporting riders performing stunts and driving recklessly on Route 347 in Hauppauge. Officers moved in, arresting two people at the scene and impounding a number of vehicles.

The group then broke apart and regrouped near Motor Parkway and Express Drive South in Brentwood. Highway Patrol units and Third Precinct officers tracked the caravan as it pushed through Bay Shore, where two ATVs broke down around 6:30 p.m. The operators fled on foot; one was caught.

Police identified the two riders arrested in Hauppauge as Ave Mongiello, 23, of Mount Sinai, and Jahkil Arroyo, 29, of Central Islip. Both face charges of reckless driving, second-degree reckless endangerment and unlawfully fleeing a police officer.

The rider apprehended in Bay Shore, Shamir Solomon, 22, of Roosevelt, was found to be carrying a loaded gun at the time of his arrest, police said. The specific charges against Solomon were not immediately released.

In all, 10 vehicles were impounded in connection with the incident, police said. No injuries were reported.

Saturday's takeover is the latest in a series of similar events across Suffolk County. The county legislature passed a law in late 2024 expanding police authority at such gatherings, allowing officers to charge not only riders but also spectators who are present within 200 feet of the illegal activity.
