Karoline Leavitt’s White House Legacy: Unapologetically America First

Washington is full of people who come and go without leaving much of a mark. Karoline Leavitt is not one of those people. President Donald Trump announced that Karoline will step down as White House press secretary at the end of August to spend more time with her young family. She recently welcomed her second child, and President Trump made clear that he understands and respects her decision. Importantly, she is not disappearing from the movement. Trump says she will remain one of his top outside advisers and an influential Republican voice heading into the midterms. As someone who knows firsthand what it is like to stand in front of an overwhelmingly hostile press corps, I have tremendous respect for what Karoline accomplished. She walked into that briefing room every day knowing that many of the people sitting across from her were not simply looking for information. They were looking for the soundbite, the contradiction, the viral confrontation, anything they could use against President Trump. Karoline never seemed intimidated. She was prepared, disciplined, quick on her feet and unapologetically loyal to the administration she represented. That matters. Karoline also made history as the youngest White House press secretary in American history. Before taking the podium, she had already worked in President Trump's first administration, served as communications director for Rep. Elise Stefanik, ran for Congress herself and became a spokeswoman for Trump's political operation and 2024 campaign. But resumes only tell part of the story. Her greatest contribution was understanding President Trump's communication philosophy. Trump does not believe Republicans should spend their time apologizing for existing. Neither did Karoline. She challenged reporters, defended the President's agenda and helped open the White House briefing room to newer and nontraditional media voices. President Trump called her one of the best White House press secretaries in the history of the office. That is extraordinary praise from a president who understands media better than virtually anyone in modern politics. Karoline leaves the podium with an impressive record and, more importantly, a future that is clearly just beginning. Politics will always be there. Your children are young only once. She served President Trump, the administration and the America First movement with extraordinary energy. Now she has earned the opportunity to put her family first while continuing to fight for the movement from outside the White House. Congratulations, Karoline. Job exceptionally well done.
