NEW YORK UNDERCOVER: Conspiracy 4 U & Me

A late-night television program about Nikola Tesla’s final years sparks questions about missing records, secret research and one of history’s most enduring scientific mysteries.

Tonight, as I was idly thumbing through broadcast stations, I chanced upon a program on Story TV called The Tesla Files. A group of guys, which included a Tesla biographer and a physicist, investigated the New Yorker Hotel (34th Street and Eighth Avenue, opened in 1930). The inventor Nikola Tesla spent his final years in this building.

For a while, the New Yorker was owned by the Unification Church (Sun Myung Moon, famous for mass weddings and claims of his own divinity). Now a real estate consortium runs it.

The researchers concentrated on various peculiarities or redundancies in the hotel’s construction and concluded that the hotel was financed and built as a covert research facility for Tesla, in effect becoming Wardenclyffe 2.

The hotel’s substructure contains very long, unexplained tunnels and much more generating capacity than the building needs. The original design called for twin towers, or spikes, on the roof. Wardenclyffe, originally funded by J.P. Morgan and whose ruins still stand on Long Island’s North Shore, was Tesla’s attempt to develop a system of wireless electrical transmission.

Tesla accumulated cartons and cartons of scientific notes at the hotel, all of which were seized in the 1940s by a U.S. government group with interlocking memberships. One set made up the Manhattan Project, which developed the atom bomb. A second, less-defined assemblage studied possible extraterrestrial life.

Einstein called Tesla “the smartest person in the world.”

The program discussed a missing safe and many missing trunks of scientific records. That reminded me of the scene from one of the Indiana Jones movies in which government personnel boxed up the Ark of the Covenant and stashed it in some endless warehouse.

Governments tend to weaponize science to the greatest extent possible. We made sure the German scientists who once did military research for Hitler emigrated to the U.S. We keep investing in bigger, better and less-detectable military devices. Some say the money would be better spent in the medical field.

I do not have a scientific mind. I simply futz around. Who is to say whether there is research gold in a purported missing Tesla safe and purported missing trunks full of records? The people who put together the program I watched certainly believed it.

Is this some kind of X-Files thing, or is it real? If you believe, join the scavenger hunt.
