A Heartbreaking End Before It Even Began

When they stood at Media Day just last week, the Port Jefferson football team looked like every other team in the room. The players were excited, the coaches were enthusiastic and there was a feeling that the season was finally right around the corner.

Little did anyone know that just days later, there would be no season at all.

Port Jefferson has been forced to cancel its football season because the program does not have enough players to field a team.

For the 11 players who continued to show up, worked their butts off and put everything they had into preparing for the season, the news has to be devastating. Coach C.J. Perrino pointed to those 11 players as the ones who will be hurt the most by this decision.

These are kids who did what they were asked to do. They showed up. They practiced. They worked. They committed themselves to their teammates and prepared for a season they believed was coming.

But 11 players simply aren't enough to play an entire football season.

The program knew there were concerns and that the season was in jeopardy, but everyone involved hoped they could find a way to keep the Royals on the field. They even explored combining with Rocky Point and allowing those 11 players to join the Eagles.

Unfortunately, that came with a major price.

If Rocky Point agreed to the arrangement, the Eagles would lose their postseason eligibility. After Rocky Point missed the playoffs last season by mere percentage points, giving up that opportunity wasn't something the program was willing to do.

And just like that, Port Jefferson's season was gone.

The Royals were scheduled to open the season Sept. 4 at Center Moriches. Under Section XI rules, all eight of Port Jefferson's scheduled games will now be counted as forfeits.

It is an incredibly difficult way to celebrate 100 years of varsity football. Think about that for a moment. One hundred years of players, coaches, families, memories, rivalries and Friday night football. Generations of young men have put on that Port Jefferson uniform and taken the field.

And now, on the 100th anniversary season, there won't be a Friday night under the lights. There won't be a first game. There won't be a Senior Night. There won't be a final whistle. There won't be a chance for those 11 players to create the memories they had spent the offseason preparing for.

Port Jefferson finished 0-9 last season and did not have a junior varsity team. The program was already facing an uphill battle, and this season was supposed to be another opportunity to build something.

Instead, the players who remained are left with something no athlete wants — a season that never happened.

The hardest part may be knowing that those 11 players were willing to play. They were willing to take the hits, put in the work and represent their school. They just needed more teammates.

Football is supposed to be about the team, and unfortunately, this is a painful reminder that sometimes even the players who give everything they have can't control the circumstances around them. For Port Jefferson, the 100th season of varsity football will now be remembered for what could have been.

And for those 11 players, it will always be the season they were ready to play — but never got the chance.
