The Bellport High School girls’ cross country team picked up its first victory of the season this week, earning a hard-fought win over Huntington to improve to 1-1 on the season.

The Clippers battled throughout the race in what proved to be a close team competition, with Bellport ultimately coming away with the victory. The win gives the team some early momentum as the season continues and provides plenty of encouragement for a group that continues to improve with each race.

Juniors Frania Vilchez and Griselda Rios led the way for Bellport, finishing first and second, respectively. Their strong performances provided the Clippers with valuable points and helped put the team in position to secure the narrow victory.

While Vilchez and Rios led the charge at the front of the race, several other Bellport runners turned in impressive performances of their own.

Sophomore Sammy Valenti continued to show her progress, recording a 55-second personal record. Freshman Kendall Hassan also posted a significant improvement, cutting 44 seconds off her previous personal record.

The Clippers’ senior runners also made noticeable strides. Senior Soraya Ortega Cordova improved her season-best time by an impressive 1 minute, 25 seconds, while senior Christina Schaefer lowered her season-best time by 1 minute, 49 seconds.

Those improvements are an encouraging sign for Bellport, particularly this early in the season. Cross country is a sport built around individual improvement and team performance, and the Clippers are seeing both come together.

With a 1-1 record, Bellport has already shown that it can compete in close meets while continuing to develop individually. The combination of strong finishes at the front of the pack and significant time improvements throughout the roster gives the Clippers plenty to build on as the season moves forward.

For Bellport, the first win of the season was more than just another mark in the win column. It was a strong team effort that showcased the hard work being put in by runners across the roster.
