Floyd Starts the Year with a W

William Floyd began its boys soccer season in nail-biting fashion, but when all was said and done, the Colonials walked away with exactly what they wanted — a win.

William Floyd put together a tremendous defensive effort in a 1-0 victory over Central Islip to open the new season.

The game remained scoreless for much of the afternoon, with both teams battling for every opportunity. The Colonials eventually broke through when Erlin Rosales scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick with 13 minutes remaining.

From there, it was up to the William Floyd defense to protect the lead, and the Colonials came through.

Goalkeepers Brandon Quijada and Matt Sfoglia each recorded three saves, combining for six saves and helping William Floyd preserve the shutout.

While the lone goal provided the difference, the Colonials’ defensive performance was what ultimately secured the victory. In a game where one mistake could have changed everything, William Floyd stayed composed and made the plays it needed to make when the pressure was at its highest.

It may not have been an offensive explosion, but there is something to be said for starting a season with a clean sheet and a hard-earned victory.

For the Colonials, the 1-0 win provides an early confidence boost as they prepare for a challenging stretch of road games.

William Floyd will now hit the road for its next two contests, traveling to face Patchogue-Medford and Sachem North before finally returning home.

The Colonials will then welcome Bay Shore as they continue what they hope will be a successful season.

For now, William Floyd can take plenty of positives from its opener. The offense found the one goal it needed, while the defense made sure it stood up.

Sometimes, especially in the first game of a new season, that is more than enough.
