William Floyd Elementary School and the William Floyd Learning Center recently welcomed professional BMX riders from One World Action Sports for a unique school assembly that combined thrilling bicycle stunts with important lessons for students.
Professional riders Jan Galavis, JR Jenkins and Chris Salopeck entertained the students with an exciting demonstration, performing a variety of tricks and stunts using a full-size BMX ramp. While the impressive riding caught everyone’s attention, the message behind the performance was just as important.
Throughout the presentation, the riders educated students about bicycle safety and stressed the importance of always wearing a helmet. They also used their time with the students to share lessons that extended well beyond riding a bicycle.
The BMX professionals encouraged students to be kind to others, avoid negative influences and pursue their dreams. They also spoke about the importance of working hard, staying motivated in school and setting a positive example for classmates and friends.
The interactive presentation gave students an opportunity to become part of the show as well. Students were able to choose which of their teachers would participate in one of the BMX stunts, adding plenty of excitement and laughter to the assembly.
The riders also challenged students with questions throughout the presentation, giving them opportunities to win prizes while reinforcing some of the lessons being discussed.
For the students, it was a chance to see professional athletes perform skills that most people only see on television while learning valuable lessons about making positive choices.
The visit demonstrated that education can take place in many different forms. Sometimes, a lesson about safety, kindness, hard work and believing in yourself can be delivered from the top of a BMX ramp.
For William Floyd’s youngest students, the BMX demonstration provided an exciting break from the traditional classroom setting while leaving them with messages they can carry with them long after the ramps were packed away.
