One of Long Island's brightest football stars has decided to stay close to home.

Ward Melville quarterback Hudson Philbrick announced this week that he has committed to continue his football career at Stony Brook University. Despite receiving several NCAA Division I opportunities, the standout signal caller chose to remain on Long Island, where he will play just minutes from the place he has called home.

Philbrick enters his senior season as one of the top quarterbacks in New York after putting together an outstanding junior campaign in 2025. He earned First Team All-Long Island honors while leading Ward Melville to the Suffolk Division I championship and establishing himself as one of the region's premier dual-threat quarterbacks.

Last season, Philbrick completed 112 of 162 passes for 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also made a significant impact with his legs, rushing 88 times for 495 yards and seven touchdowns, showcasing the athleticism and versatility that attracted college programs from across the country.

In announcing his decision on Instagram, Philbrick expressed gratitude to everyone who helped him reach this milestone.

"After a lot of prayer, thought, and conversations with my family, I am beyond blessed to say that I will be committing to Stony Brook Football," Philbrick wrote.

He went on to thank God for guiding him throughout the recruiting process before expressing his appreciation to the coaches who helped shape his career.

"I also want to thank all of the coaches who have helped me get to this point, most importantly Coach Boltrek, Coach Brady, and Coach Angel. They have built me into the player and person that I am today, and words can't describe how thankful I am for them."

Philbrick also reserved special thanks for his family.

"Without them I wouldn't be where I am today, and I truly can't thank them enough," he wrote.

For Stony Brook, Philbrick's commitment represents the addition of one of the most accomplished quarterbacks on Long Island. For local football fans, it also means they'll have the opportunity to continue watching one of the area's biggest stars for years to come without leaving Suffolk County.
