Floyd Takes Control Early to Begin the Season with a Win

William Floyd opened its football season with a decisive 39-21 victory on the road over Connetquot this past week. The Colonials came out fast and never looked back, taking control early and putting together a performance that was even more dominant than the final score indicated.

Floyd jumped out to a 19-0 lead after the first quarter, setting the tone from the opening whistle. The Colonials continued to add to their advantage throughout the first half, heading into the locker room with a commanding 32-7 lead.

Everything seemed to be working for the William Floyd offense early, with Matt Taiani accounting for three touchdowns. Taiani threw for one score, but on a day when the Colonials' ground game took control, he also found the end zone twice on the ground.

While the offense was putting up points, the Floyd defense was making plenty of plays of its own.

The defense is led by the preseason Defensive Player of the Year Jake Rivera, but it was Derek Glock who came up with one of the biggest defensive plays of the afternoon, returning an interception 56 yards for a touchdown. Dashawn Jackson also had a big game, recording 11 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.

The strong defensive performance was nothing new for the Colonials, who have established themselves as a difficult team to beat away from home. With the victory over Connetquot, William Floyd has now won five consecutive road games dating back to last season.

Even more impressive is how well the defense has performed during that stretch. The Colonials are 5-0 on the road over their last five games and have surrendered fewer than 10 points per game during that span.

After opening the season with an impressive road victory, William Floyd will hit the road again for its next matchup. The Colonials will travel to take on Sachem North at 6 p.m. on September 18.

Connetquot will also be back in action on September 18, but the Thunderbirds will remain home as they host Central Islip at 6 p.m.

For William Floyd, the season could not have gotten off to a much better start, and the Colonials will look to keep that road success going when they face Sachem North.
