Kickoff Classic Delivers a Night to Remember

Friday night was about as special as a regular-season football game can get in Suffolk County.

The third annual Kickoff Classic between Sachem North and William Floyd already had plenty going for it, but this year's matchup carried even more significance for the Sachem community. The night served as a celebration of the 40th anniversary of one of the greatest teams in Sachem football history — the legendary 1986 Suffolk County championship and Rutgers Trophy team.

The celebration began before the first whistle when Sachem North welcomed back members of that historic squad, giving fans an opportunity to recognize the players who helped establish their place in Black and Gold history.

The 1986 team finished the season with a remarkable 9-1 record and recorded five shutouts while allowing just 44 points all season. The magical run culminated with a 14-0 victory over West Islip in the Suffolk County Division I championship game.

There was even a special musical touch to the celebration. Sachem alumnus Christopher Macchio, known as “America's Tenor,” performed for the crowd before the game, adding another memorable moment to an already special night.

Once the football began, the current generation of Sachem North players made sure the evening had plenty of excitement of its own.

The National Football Foundation could not have asked for a better matchup between two talented teams, and Sachem North quarterback Luke LaRocca quickly took center stage.

LaRocca completed 13 of 15 passes for three touchdowns while rushing for 85 yards and another score, leading Sachem North to a convincing 35-13 victory over William Floyd.

The Sachem offense was balanced throughout the night. Six players carried the ball, with four recording double-digit rushing yards.

Lucas Bouchard was LaRocca's favorite big-play target, finishing with more than 100 receiving yards and two touchdown catches. John Mullaly led the team with seven receptions, while Gavin Nuzzi added three catches and a touchdown.

The victory also continued an impressive offensive start for Sachem North, which has now scored 77 points through its first two games of the season.

For William Floyd, it was a difficult night against a Sachem offense that was clicking on nearly every level. The Colonials did get a strong defensive performance from preseason Defensive Player of the Year Jake Rivera, who recorded two sacks and recovered a fumble.

William Floyd has opened the season 1-1, with both games coming on the road. The Colonials will finally return home this weekend when they host Brentwood.

For Sachem North, Friday night was about much more than a football game. It was a night that connected generations of Sachem football — honoring the players who built the program's history while watching a new group of Black and Gold athletes create some history of their own.
