The Sayville School District community came together for an evening of fitness, fun and school spirit as students of all ages participated in the STRIDES Glow Run at Sayville Middle School on October 21. Dressed in their brightest neon outfits and covered in glow sticks, stickers, temporary tattoos and even reflective face paint, students, faculty, staff and community members turned the event into a colorful celebration.

The Glow Run highlighted the important connection between physical and mental health, encouraging students to understand that taking care of their bodies also plays an important role in maintaining healthy minds.

The event was organized through a partnership between Jillian Makris, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services, and Dr. Ryan Cox, Director of Physical Education, Health and Interscholastic Athletics. Student-athletes, coaches and school teams also participated, serving as positive role models for younger students.

"I'm so proud the Glow Run was such a hit with our entire school community," Makris said. She added that the event helped empower students to better care for their minds, bodies and emotional well-being, both inside and outside the classroom.

The evening featured plenty of activities beyond the run itself. Attendees signed a commemorative Glow Run banner before making their way through the course, which featured inflatable arches marking important milestones. The finish line was decorated with colorful streamers and illuminated by black lights.

After the run, the celebration continued with a block party atmosphere. Older students handed out glow sticks to younger children, while families enjoyed shaved ice from a Kona Ice truck and snacks provided by the SEPTA table. Lincoln Avenue Elementary School Principal Dominic Armano took on DJ duties, sporting a light-up outfit and inviting students onto a balloon-decorated dance floor.

The event celebrated STRIDES, Sayville's Social and Emotional Wellness initiative, which stands for Self-esteem, Trust, Resiliency, Independence, Diversity, Empathy and Strength. First launched by Makris during the 2019-2020 school year, the program continues to encourage the qualities that help students thrive.
