William Floyd Football Heads Back to Playoffs After Dramatic Senior Day Victory

The William Floyd varsity football team is headed back to the playoffs, continuing one of the most impressive streaks in Suffolk County high school sports. The Colonials have now qualified for the postseason for an incredible 27 consecutive seasons after finishing the regular season with a 5-3 record and earning the No. 4 seed in Division I.

William Floyd will host No. 5 Connetquot on Saturday, November 7, at noon in a first-round playoff matchup. The Colonials defeated Connetquot 39-21 in their season opener and will look to repeat that performance with a spot in the next round on the line.

The Colonials secured their home playoff game with a thrilling 21-14 victory over Sachem East on Halloween. The game also served as Senior Day for the football team, varsity cheerleading squad and Rockettes, making it a memorable afternoon for the student-athletes and their families.

William Floyd found itself trailing 7-0 in the second quarter before Matthew Taiani powered into the end zone for a rushing touchdown. Although the extra point was blocked, the Colonials had cut the deficit to 7-6. Sachem East added another touchdown before halftime to take a 14-6 lead.

The Colonials responded in the third quarter when Taiani connected with Derek Glock for a 33-yard touchdown reception. Ryley Permenter followed with a successful two-point conversion run to tie the game at 14.

With the teams still even late in the fourth quarter, William Floyd put together one final drive. On fourth down near the goal line, Permenter battled his way into the end zone with less than 10 seconds remaining to give the Colonials a 21-14 lead. The defense then completed a second-half shutout to secure the victory.

With 27 straight playoff appearances, the Colonials now turn their attention to another postseason run.
