Longwood standout athlete Michael Adams is getting some well-deserved attention after being nominated for Youth Athlete of the Year and currently sitting in third place in the voting.
Adams’ journey to this nomination is an impressive one. After suffering injuries twice during basketball season, he was forced to find another way to stay active and continue competing. That led him to track and field, where he quickly discovered a new talent.
After just two months of training in the triple jump, Adams earned All-League honors, making a remarkable transition into an event that was completely new to him.
Triple jump is just one part of Adams’ athletic resume. He also competes in basketball and soccer, and he has used track and field as a way to maintain his stamina and athletic conditioning for both sports.
During his time in track, Adams competed in the 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter events, along with the 4x400-meter relay. But when injuries kept him off the basketball court, he decided to try something different.
After fracturing his hand and suffering an injury to one of his teeth, Adams was not permitted to return to basketball. Rather than allowing those setbacks to take over, he put his time and energy into track and field.
The decision paid off.
Adams found success in the triple jump, an event that allows him to rely heavily on his own strength, determination and willpower. Making All-League after only two months of training showed just how quickly he was able to adapt.
His family said they were proud of how he handled the adversity, but even more importantly, they could see how proud Adams was of himself.
Now, Adams has another opportunity to showcase what he can do. The Youth Athlete of the Year winner will receive $25,000 and represent 3Brand in Sports Illustrated and on CBS.
