Longwood’s Samantha Rostron Leads Long Island in Digs

Longwood High School senior captain Samantha Rostron put together an outstanding season on the volleyball court, finishing the 2026 campaign as Long Island’s leader in digs.

Rostron, a libero and defensive specialist for the Lions, recorded an impressive 385 digs this season, the highest total of any volleyball player on Long Island. Her strong performance also earned her a spot on Newsday’s Top 100 volleyball players on Long Island list.

A key part of Longwood’s success, Rostron has established herself as the team’s defensive anchor. Playing in the back row, she is often the first player called upon to keep a rally alive, using her quick reactions, determination and ability to read the opposing attack to keep the ball in play.

Her senior season was a tremendous step forward. After recording 196 digs as a junior, Rostron nearly doubled that total in 2026, showing just how much she continued to grow as a player. Her 385 digs not only led Longwood but placed her at the top of the list among all volleyball players across Long Island.

The accomplishment is even more impressive when looking at her career totals. Combining her production from the 2025 and 2026 seasons, Rostron has accumulated 581 digs during her time with the Lions.

For a libero, digs are one of the most important measures of defensive play. Every successful dig gives a team another opportunity to organize its offense and turn a defensive play into a scoring chance. Rostron’s season-long consistency made her a valuable presence whenever the Lions took the court.

From her leadership as a senior captain to her record-setting defensive numbers, Rostron has left a lasting mark on the Longwood volleyball program.
