Smithtown runners are already getting into midseason form as they prepare for another fall of cross country competition.
Students in grades 6-12 recently spent the week working on conditioning, building endurance and, of course, having plenty of fun at the Smithtown Booster Club’s Cross Country Camp.
The camp gave young runners an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season while working on the fundamentals that will help them once the meets begin. Athletes took part in both short- and long-distance running activities, giving runners of all experience levels a chance to improve their endurance and push themselves.
But it wasn't all running.
The campers also participated in fun games and team-building activities, creating the kind of atmosphere that helps build camaraderie before the competitive season gets underway. And with plenty of hydration built into the week, the runners had everything they needed to stay active while beating the summer heat.
For Smithtown’s cross country program, developing that team atmosphere is nothing new. The Smithtown Central School District’s combined cross country team has built an impressive tradition, winning more than 50 consecutive dual meets dating back to 2016.
That kind of success doesn't happen by accident. It comes from years of hard work, dedication and runners willing to put in the effort long before they step to the starting line.
This year’s group is now working to carry that tradition forward.
For the younger runners, the camp provided a chance to learn from more experienced teammates and get a feel for what it takes to compete at the high school level. For returning runners, it was an opportunity to sharpen their skills and prepare for another demanding season.
The first meet of the season is scheduled for the second week of September, meaning the countdown is officially on.
After a week of running, conditioning, teamwork and plenty of fun, Smithtown’s runners appear ready to lace up their shoes and get the season started.
