Sachem Apologizes to William Floyd

The Sachem School District has apologized to the William Floyd community following an incident involving offensive signs reportedly displayed by students during last Friday night’s football game between Sachem North and William Floyd.

Sachem Superintendent Patti Trombetta addressed the incident in a message to the district community, acknowledging the concerns surrounding the signs and making it clear that the behavior did not represent the standards expected from Sachem students.

“As many of you are aware, an incident occurred at our Friday night football game against William Floyd,” Trombetta wrote.

According to reports, Sachem North students displayed signs containing offensive and inappropriate messages directed toward the girlfriends of William Floyd football players. The incident drew criticism from members of the William Floyd community and prompted the Sachem administration to respond.

In her message, Trombetta said the signs “do not align with the respect and sportsmanship we expect from our student body,” adding that such behavior “will not be tolerated.” She also issued an apology to the William Floyd community for any hurt caused by the incident.

The superintendent also emphasized that schools have a responsibility to support students while holding them accountable for their actions and helping them understand the impact of their choices.

The incident has also prompted William Floyd parents to raise their concerns with the Sachem School District. Parents were expected to attend a Sachem Board of Education meeting to address the situation.

While the rivalry between local high school football programs can bring plenty of emotion and school spirit, sportsmanship remains an important part of the high school athletic experience. The incident serves as a reminder that competition and school pride should remain within appropriate boundaries.

Trombetta said Sachem will continue reinforcing the importance of “sportsmanship, respect, and responsibility” moving forward.
