Sachem football recently took the opportunity to honor someone who has spent decades giving back to the program and the community that helped shape him.

Doug Pandolf, Sachem Class of 1987, was named this year's honoree at the Sachem Football Golf Outing, recognizing 35 years of dedication as a volunteer youth football and lacrosse coach.

For Pandolf, coaching has never simply been about wins and losses. It has been about giving his time to the next generation of athletes and helping young people learn the lessons that come with being part of a team.

A product of the Sachem program himself, Pandolf has spent decades giving back to the community, coaching generations of Sachem student-athletes along the way.

That longevity makes the honor particularly meaningful. Over 35 years, Pandolf has watched young athletes grow from children learning the fundamentals of the game into high school players representing Sachem. Many of those athletes have gone on to become leaders in their own right, carrying with them the lessons they learned from coaches and mentors like Pandolf.

His commitment to both football and lacrosse has made him a familiar face throughout the Sachem community, and his willingness to volunteer his time year after year has helped strengthen the youth sports programs that serve local families.

The recognition was presented by Sachem coaches Dave Caputo and Anthony Gambino, who honored Pandolf during the golf outing.

For a community that places such a strong emphasis on youth athletics, volunteers like Pandolf are an important part of the equation. Coaches provide much more than instruction on the field. They become mentors, role models and trusted adults who can make an impact that lasts well beyond a season.

Pandolf's 35 years of service are a perfect example.

He has coached generations of Sachem athletes, but his greatest contribution may be the example he has set for those players — showing them the importance of giving back to the community and making time to help the next generation.

From Sachem player to longtime coach and community volunteer, Pandolf's connection to the program has come full circle.

The Sachem Football Golf Outing provided a fitting opportunity to recognize someone who has spent more than three decades making the Sachem community a better place, one young athlete at a time.
