Storm Delayed, But the Colonials Still Brought the Thunder

After a two-day wait, the William Floyd Colonials finally got their chance to celebrate homecoming on the football field, and they made the most of it.
After rain and storms forced the postponement, the weather eventually cleared, but it certainly did not dampen the enthusiasm surrounding homecoming at the Lincoln Avenue Sports Complex. The Colonials responded with an impressive all-around performance, defeating the Brentwood Spartans, 42-21.
Led by head coach Pete Friedman, William Floyd received contributions from all three phases of the game as the Colonials improved to 2-1 on the season.
Senior Derek Glock set the tone early and was all over the field in the opening quarter. Glock recorded more than 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns on offense while also coming up with an interception on defense. His big plays helped the Colonials jump out to an early 14-0 advantage.
The second quarter belonged to another William Floyd senior.
Christian Hobson made his presence felt on both sides of the ball, catching a 26-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Matt Taiani to extend the Colonials’ lead to 21-0. Hobson then turned defense into offense, returning an interception 40 yards for a touchdown to send William Floyd into halftime with a commanding 28-0 advantage.
With the Colonials firmly in control, sophomore Da’Vonte Medlock took over in the second half.
Medlock broke loose for touchdown runs of 73 and 34 yards, helping William Floyd put the finishing touches on the 42-21 victory. The sophomore finished the afternoon with a dominant 173 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Taiani also turned in an impressive performance at quarterback, finishing with 183 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Two of those scoring strikes covered 66 and 46 yards, with the latter going to Glock, who finished the game with a whopping 155 receiving yards.
While the Colonials were clicking offensively, the defense continued to make big plays. Senior Brooklyn Cox led the defensive effort with 11 tackles and a sack, helping William Floyd keep Brentwood off the scoreboard until the Spartans finally found their footing in the second half.
The victory was a complete team effort and a memorable way for the Colonials to finally celebrate their homecoming after the weather delay.
William Floyd now improves to 2-1 and will hit the road this Saturday, Oct. 3, for a 2 p.m. matchup against Ward Melville.
The Colonials will return home on Saturday, Oct. 17, when they host Walt Whitman at noon.
