Success Beyond the Scoreboard

Center Moriches High School is celebrating an outstanding achievement after being named a New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) School of Distinction for the 2025-2026 school year.

The prestigious designation recognizes schools that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to academic excellence across all of their varsity athletic programs, highlighting the success of student-athletes both in the classroom and in competition.

"This recognition reflects the culture we strive to build throughout our district—a culture where students understand that success in the classroom and on the field go hand in hand," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ricardo Soto. "Our student-athletes, coaches, teachers, and families all share a commitment to high expectations, and this achievement is a testament to their hard work, discipline, and dedication. We are incredibly proud of our students for representing Center Moriches with excellence in every aspect of their educational experience."

To earn the School of Distinction honor, every varsity team at a school must receive NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team recognition during its respective sports season. That recognition is awarded when at least 75 percent of a team's active roster achieves a collective grade point average of 90.0 or higher during the official marking period or sports season.

Center Moriches was one of only 118 schools across New York State to receive the School of Distinction Award for the 2025-2026 school year, placing the district among an elite group recognized for fostering academic achievement throughout its athletic programs.

While championships and trophies often capture the spotlight, this honor reflects a different kind of success—one built on discipline, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence in the classroom.

The recognition is a credit to the dedication of Center Moriches' student-athletes, as well as the coaches, teachers, administrators, and families who support them every step of the way. Together, they have created an environment where academic success is celebrated just as much as athletic accomplishments.
