Suffolk County Hall of Fame Honors Long Island Boxing Legends

Long Island has produced its share of legendary athletes, and two of the most recognizable names in boxing were recently honored for their contributions to the sporting culture of the region.

At a recent Long Island charities event, the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame and Chris Vaccaro recognized two native Long Islanders who have left their mark on the boxing world: Gerry Cooney and Buddy McGirt.

Both boxing legends were presented with the Hall of Fame’s Presidential Medal for their contributions to sports and the lasting impact they have had on the local athletic community.

Cooney and McGirt represent two different paths to greatness inside the boxing ring, but their connection to Suffolk County is something they share.

McGirt was a former world champion who built an impressive career as a fighter before going on to make his mark as a trainer. Cooney became one of boxing’s most recognizable heavyweights, known for his tremendous punching power and exciting style.

Vaccaro highlighted the accomplishments of both fighters, writing that “McGirt is a former champ and Cooney is one of the greatest, hardest heavyweight punchers in boxing history.”

That is quite a résumé for two athletes who both have roots right here in Suffolk County.

Their careers helped put Long Island on the boxing map, and their accomplishments continue to be remembered by generations of fans who followed them throughout their time in the sport.

The Presidential Medal recognition serves as another reminder that the impact of an athlete often goes well beyond wins and losses. For Cooney and McGirt, their contributions have become part of the sporting history of Suffolk County and Long Island.

From the local gyms where fighters first learn the craft to the biggest stages in professional boxing, Long Island has always had a strong connection to the sport.

Having two Suffolk County natives like Cooney and McGirt recognized together makes the honor particularly meaningful.
