Trust the Lefty

After my first ever loss for the free plays it's time to get back to winning. Parker Messick isn't the flashiest name on the board, but that's exactly why there's value here. Casual bettors tend to overlook pitchers who don't have household-name recognition, and that creates opportunities. Messick has quietly put together one of the most consistent seasons in baseball, and tonight sets up perfectly for him.

The Cleveland left-hander enters this start with an 8-3 record and a stellar 2.73 ERA. Even more impressive is how consistently he limits damage. Messick has allowed just two total runs over his last two starts, and that's been the story all season.

In 14 of his 19 starts, Messick has held opponents to two runs or fewer. In 16 of those 19 outings, he hasn't allowed more than three runs, and no team has scored more than three earned runs against him all year. That type of consistency is exactly what bettors should be looking for.

The matchup also favors Cleveland. The Twins have struggled against left-handed pitching all season, batting just .228 as a team against southpaws. They've had trouble generating consistent offense in those spots, and Messick has the command and pitch mix to exploit that weakness.

On the other side, Minnesota is expected to use a bullpen game, and that couldn't come at a worse time. The Twins' relief corps has been worked hard over the past several days after being forced into extended action. They've surrendered 29 runs over their last three games, including 13 runs last night, leaving a bullpen that is both overworked and lacking confidence.

That's a recipe for trouble against a Cleveland lineup that should have opportunities throughout the game.

Everything lines up in the Guardians' favor. They have the superior starting pitcher, the fresher pitching staff and a matchup against a tired bullpen that has been getting hit hard.

I'm not overthinking this one.

The play: Cleveland Guardians -140. Messick has been one of the most reliable pitchers in baseball, and this is an ideal spot for him to continue that trend while leading Cleveland to another victory.
